iPhone 14 is only a few weeks away, but leaks have already revealed much of what to expect. According to early reports, the new handset will include significant new features, improvements, and the removal of some well-known design elements. The phone, along with a slew of other products, will be released by Apple in September. But here's everything we know about the iPhone 14, including a possible date for the big Apple event.
According to numerous reports, Apple has finally removed the notch that is cut out of the top of the display in the new devices. Instead, all of the components that are hidden there, such as the facial recognition sensor and front-facing camera, could be placed in a small cutout at the top of the screen, allowing the display to extend all the way up. That redesign could be limited to Pro models only. Rumours suggest that regular iPhones will have the same notch as the iPhone 13. Otherwise, the design is expected to stay largely the same. There may be some tweaks – such as the repositioning of the camera lenses – but the same rough design will stay.
Specifications on the inside
On the inside, the phones may change less frequently than usual. Some new features are on the way, but others may not. According to one rumour, only the Pro models will receive the new A16 chip, while the non-Pro models will continue to use the A15 chip found in the iPhone 13. And, in any case, the A16 may only be a marginal improvement over its predecessor. However, Apple may compensate by improving the camera system. The Pro models could get a vastly improved wide camera, allowing for both larger images and better images in low light.
Features
The most significant feature for the iPhone 14 could be an always-on display. This has been suggested not only by numerous rumours but also by the upcoming iOS 16 release, which appears to include design features aimed at making the most of that display by displaying important updates.
Sizes
This year, the sizes are also expected to change. The Mini is expected to be phased out—it has never sold as well as its larger siblings, according to reports—and Apple will instead offer the phones in just two sizes. Those dimensions are likely to be the same as those of the Pro models: a 6.1-inch normal phone and a 6.7-inch Max phone. So four phones in two sizes will be available.
Release date
The easiest part of iPhone forecasting is predicting the release date: it follows a predictable schedule, so you can almost predict it years in advance. Any deviations could cause major issues for Apple, which usually means that if it isn't following the usual plan, information will leak out. The phone is usually revealed in the second week of September and then released on a Friday, a week and a half later. While that has changed somewhat in recent years, since the pandemic, Apple’s usually regular release schedule has become a little less regular – it will likely be on a similar schedule, if not the exact same. The launch event will probably be an entirely or mostly online affair, as it has been since the pandemic. Apple has already been reported to have started recording that introduction.
Price
In terms of predictions, pricing is the polar opposite: nothing has to be set in stone ahead of time, so Apple can change it up until the day the new phones are announced. While it won't be quite as last-minute, any predictions should be taken with a grain of salt. Everything has become more expensive in recent months, including electronic devices. Apple, on the other hand, tends to resist excessive price increases, so the iPhone 14 will most likely be slightly more expensive than the iPhone 13. We've heard one iPhone 14 price leak that revealed four new models, including a Max but no Mini. The base phone will reportedly start at $799, while the iPhone 13 starts at $799/£779/AU $1,349. So that fits, with the iPhone 14 Max costing $100 more. Similarly, we've heard that the iPhone 14 will be priced similarly to the iPhone 13. The iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max are expected to cost $1,099 and $1,199, respectively, which is $100 more than the starting price of their predecessors. This claim has recently been echoed.
Battery:
There are claims that battery capacity will increase as phones become thicker to accommodate larger batteries. One leak detailed possible specific capacities, with all but the iPhone 14 Pro Max increasing.
Even before the iPhone 14 release date rumours began to circulate, we were able to make an educated guess, as Apple typically announces new models around the same time each year, usually at a special event. The iPhone 13 was announced on September 14, 2021, and it went on sale on September 24. While we are unlikely to see the iPhone 14 on those exact dates in 2022, we are anticipating a September 13 launch date for the new iPhones, with the phones scheduled to be released on September 23. The rumoured delays appear to have abated for the time being, as production appeared to be on track for a long time, with trial production apparently starting (as of late February) and engineering validation underway.
And, while we've heard that Chinese lockdowns have slowed things down, with at least one model in the iPhone 14 lineup, believed to be the iPhone 14 Max, reportedly three weeks behind schedule, it appears that most models are on track. Apple is allegedly attempting to expedite things, and Ming-Chi Kuo (opens in a new tab), a reputable analyst, claimed the situation was under control as of May. But in July, we learned from another source that Apple is still "way behind" on panel production for the iPhone 14 Max, so things aren't looking good for that model. Having said that, we learned in August that Apple planned to produce 90 million units of the iPhone 14 line in 2022, which is in line with previous estimates.
